As we settle into April, I’m reminded of a book I read over twenty years ago, Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, MD. It’s a short book on management about how to deal with change in your work and life.

Spencer gives tips such as anticipate and monitor change, get ready for the cheese to move, smell the cheese often so you know when it’s getting old, adapt to change quickly. Enjoy the change, savor the adventure and the taste of new cheese. Be ready to move with the cheese, again and again, because the cheese will keep moving. But why talk about cheese and change in April?

We can all agree that change is inevitable, when change happens, we may find ourselves asking, who moved the cheese? Well— we are in the middle of change and the cheese has moved. COVID has changed the fabric of our society, and it’s going to continue to change.

So how do we deal with change in our life and work? For our firm, those changes have looked like rebalancing portfolios, creating a new website, and adapting to serve clients both virtually and in-person as we move towards safe ways of meeting. For you, a great place to start may be to think through changes you made this past year when the cheese was moved. Then think of changes you need to make this coming year. Start with the one that will help you feel better prepared for future change. If that change is a financial one, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us, we are always here to help. 

If you are someone who finds change difficult, reading this book could be a great first step to take. Just remember, change presents us with a choice: accept and adapt or resist and regress.

Change is inevitable, let’s choose to adapt.
